Due to the success of the flight of Freedom 7 President John F. Kennedy issued a challenge to the nation. The quote borders the painting.

At the top of the painting we see a Mercury spacecraft above the Earth. I’ll leave it to the viewer to decide which mission it depicts.

We see JFK looking towards the Moon, the stars in the U.S. Flag become the stars in space in tribute to those who flew those pioneering missions.

• Alan Shepard is smiling broadly because he’s just been told that he’ll be first.
• Gus Grissom is focused and ready to play his part.
• John Glenn the oldest and most astute with the media notices the viewer and breaks the fourth wall and smiles.
• Scott Carpenter is more contemplative and curious about what can be learned from the flight.
• Wally Schirra is ready to fly the ultimate and most perfect test flight.
• Gordo Cooper the youngest of the Seven looks up at the Moon and dreams of the future.
• Deke Slayton denied his Mercury flight becomes the Director of Flight Operations and “Chief Astronaut” playing a greater role than he ever imagined.

At the bottom left we see a Mercury Redstone and a Mercury Atlas launching at dawn. The dawn of the U.S. space program. On the right the Mercury 7 Monument which was dedicated on November 10, 1964.

The term "Camelot" was first publicly used to describe the Kennedy presidency just days after his assassination. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy coined the term during an exclusive interview with journalist Theodore H. White on November 29, 1963. The Mercury astronauts wore silver-colored full-pressure suits adapted from the U.S. Navy Mark IV high-altitude jet pilot suit. As a boy they reminded me of medieval knights, hence the title of this piece:

“The Knights of Camelot.”
