On this gospel-themed collection, the artist who brought "new traditionalism" to Nashville goes all the way back to the Rock of Ages. Old-time religion meets old-time country on "Feet on the Rock," with other material ranging from the Judgement Day literalism of "Which Way Will You Choose" to the mystically metaphorical "See Myself in You" to a stripped-to-the-bone, album-closing rendition of "Amazing Grace." The loping "The Carpenter" (one of three songs cowritten by Travis) features guest vocals from Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, while "Doctor Jesus," with its mournful steel guitar, could pass for vintage George Jones. Though some of the lesser tracks are stronger on sermonizing than musical appeal, the melodic uplift of "Baptism" could highlight any Travis album. --Don McLeese

It has been said on more than one occasion that traditional country and Southern gospel music are "kissin cousins." But rarely has there been an "exhibit A" that illustrates the point as well as Randy Travis newest release, Inspirational Journey.
It was his baptism four years ago that inspired Travis to record an album of songs that reflect his faith. He has crafted a superb collage of 12 tunes (11 originals plus "Amazing Grace") that sticks closely to his multi-platinum selling musical formula while offering an in-depth look at the Christian faith. Ron Block of Union Station penned the gutsy "Which Way Will You Choose," while Mickey Cates wrote the picturesque "Baptism," a tune slated to release on country radio under the title, "Down With the Old Man." In addition, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Coulter contribute substantial vocals on "The Carpenter," one of the three cuts Travis co-wrote.
Traditional country music is famous for its abundance of steel guitar, fiddle, three-part harmonies and enough all-around twang to get even the laziest boot scooting. Southern gospel has often been known to inspire involuntary foot stomping and head bobbing. Inspirational Journey combines the two in a seamless blend that sticks to the basics. And as is usually the case with Travis, it works. -- By Laura Harris (c) 2001 CCM Communications, Inc. -- From CCM Magazine -- Subscribe Now!, ISBN13: B00004Z45O ISBN10: B00004Z45O Material Type: audioCD
