The Besseggen Ridge is one of Norway’s most popular mountain hikes and certainly one of the best of the Jotunheimen National Park Hiking Trails. The Besseggen Ridge hike has a length of 14 km/ 8.6 miles and runs between two DNT Cabins (lodges by ‘The Norwegian Trekking Association’), namely Gjendesheim and Memurubu. You can start the Besseggen Ridge trail on either end, but starting from Memurubu involves an early morning boat trip over the Gjende and making sure to look over your shoulder once in a while during the hike for some spectacular views! What makes the Besseggen Ridge in Jotunheimen so unique are the mesmerizing and panoramic views from the ridge over the two lakes, Gjende Lake and Bessvatnet. Gjende Lake is well-known for its beautiful emerald color and for being long and narrow, while Bessvatnet is one of Norway’s clearest lakes and welcomes you with its deep blue color. The hike is certainly not a walk in the park, with the peak reaching 1743 m/ 5718 ft and a total of 1200 m/ 3937 ft descend/ascend. The ridge is quite narrow, which could pose a challenge when crowded and for those with a fear of heights. But the views and the beauty of the Jotunheimen’s wilderness make it so worthwhile! And if you are lucky, you might even spot a reindeer along the way!
